Hill College track teams look to make a run on local, state, national levels
Hill College runners look to make a statement at the local, state, and national levels this season as head coach Greg Lautenslager has put together an arsenal of talent on both the men’s and women’s teams.
High on the Hill College radar is freshman running phenom Beyon Prins.
Prins journeyed to Hill College from Cape Town, South Africa via changeover stops in Amsterdam, London, and Dallas and with hopes of attaining national glory.
“[Prins] can do it,” Lautenslager said. “He has awesome talent, and he is a very hard-working, coachable student-athlete. I have no doubt he will inspire his new teammates to great performances this season.”
Lautenslager also said Prins’ personal best of 1:52.12 would have placed him seventh in the NJCAA Track and Field Championships 800m final last spring. He has set a goal of 1:48 this season.
Prins will compete in the 1,000 meters alongside Hill College’s top 1,500m runner Ricky Santos at Friday’s meet in Fort Worth.
Miguel Sanchez, Hill College’s top cross country runner last season, will lead freshmen Caden Floyd, Saul Lopez, and Jahziel Cruz in the mile run. Sophomores Max Austin and Skye Robb will compete in the 3,000m run.
Aimee Clarke, who is currently the Hill College women’s school record holder in the 1,500m and 5,000m, will compete in the mile run on Friday.
Avery McCoy is scheduled to run the 3,000m; while Angela Coronado, Elaina McCulloch, Emma Hennesey, and Christiana Kamrath are entered in the 1,000m run.
The Hill College track season will continue March 7 with the Centex Invitational in Georgetown and proceed with meets almost every weekend in March and April with the aim of student-athletes reaching the qualifying standards for the NJCAA Track and Field Championships May 14-16 in Hobbs, New Mexico.
