Women’s basketball team consistently ranked in ‘Texas Top 10’ poll
Hill College’s women’s basketball team hit the ground running with a 96-78 conference-opening win over Southwestern Christian College Jan. 10 at the Bob Bullock Sports Center.
The Rebels (11-6 overall, 2-1 conference) have consistently been ranked in the “Texas Top 10” poll since the beginning of the season along with conference foes McLennan Community College (also No. 7 in the country), Collin College (also No. 19 in the country), and Grayson College (also No. 24 in the country).
“We have a great mixture of talent with size, length, and athleticism,” Hill College Women’s Head Basketball Coach Antreanna Brooks said. “We also have 4-5 people who can get hot at any point and go for 20-plus points.”
Sophomore guard Kiah Goynes currently leads the Rebels in scoring with a total of 267 points, followed by freshman guard Ava Batty with 221 points, and freshman forward Kamarie Hardeman with 172 points.
Hardeman also leads the team in field goal percentage (52 percent).
“Our freshman class is really starting to figure out how to play college basketball,” Brooks said. “That first semester – everything was just new to them. Now, they are really finding ways to click on both sides of the ball.”
The Rebels will conclude a two-game home stand Jan. 24 as they host Cisco College beginning at 2 p.m.
“This team continues to grow every day, continues to push each other, and relies on each other,” Brooks added. “It’s a special thing to watch happen. We may not with every game, but we won’t stop fighting no matter what. That's just the Hill College way.”
Hill College competes in the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) along with McLennan Community College, Collin College, Grayson College, Temple College, Ranger College, Cisco College, Southwestern Christian College, and Weatherford College.
This year’s Region 5 Women’s Basketball Tournament is scheduled for March 5 in Odessa.
